Update without removing anything
Copies new and changed files to the destination. Files that only exist in the destination are left where they are.
Suitable if you want to keep a copy up to date without deleting anything.
See first, then sync.
SyncGuard shows you what will happen to your files, carries it out safely and can explain afterwards exactly what happened. A new Mac app from Aurelius Technology for anyone who wants to keep folders in step in a controlled way.
SyncGuard is in development and not yet available. Availability, price and system requirements will be announced on this page.
Why SyncGuard
Keeping a folder in step with an external drive or a second location seems simple, until something goes wrong: the wrong direction, a forgotten setting or a drive that is disconnected halfway. Then you want to know exactly what happened, and whether you can undo it.
That is why SyncGuard is built around one principle: nothing changes in your files until you have seen and approved the plan. And afterwards you can read what was done.
How it works
Save a pair of folders in a profile and choose how the destination should be updated: with Update or with Mirror.
SyncGuard analyses both folders and shows for every file what will happen and why. Deletions are always flagged separately.
Only the plan you approved is carried out. Every file is first copied safely and verified.
Afterwards you see for every action what was done and verified. You can save the report as a Markdown file.
Two ways
Copies new and changed files to the destination. Files that only exist in the destination are left where they are.
Suitable if you want to keep a copy up to date without deleting anything.
Files that only exist in the destination are deleted. You see those deletions in the plan beforehand, and every deleted file is kept first.
Suitable if you want an exact copy of a folder.
Possibilities
SyncGuard is made for regular, recurring tasks with folders on your Mac and on connected drives.
External drive
Keep your project folder and its copy on your external SSD in step. With Update, files that only exist on the drive stay where they are.
Exact copy
With Mirror the destination becomes identical to the source, including deletions. You see beforehand which files will disappear.
Profiles
Every folder pair gets its own profile with its own settings. Next time you start the analysis from that profile, without setting everything up again.
Control
Warnings about deletions stay visible, even when you filter or sort the list. That way you miss nothing.
Recovery
Files that are replaced or deleted are archived first. You restore a saved version into a separate folder, without overwriting anything.
Reports
Every run produces a report with all actions and checks. Useful for yourself, and for a studio or office that needs to be able to check what was done.
Who is it for? Anyone who works with large project folders and external drives: photographers, video makers and designers, small studios and offices, and Mac users who want to stay in control of their files.
Safety first
Speed matters less than certainty. When in doubt, SyncGuard stops or asks for confirmation.
SyncGuard only carries out a plan you have seen and approved. Every action has a reason.
Every file is first copied next to the destination, verified and only then put in place in one step. If anything goes wrong, the destination is left untouched.
SyncGuard can compare the full content of every copy using SHA-256. For new profiles this check is switched on by default.
A file that is replaced or deleted is archived first, so you can go back if you need to.
Has a file in the destination changed since you reviewed the plan? Then SyncGuard leaves it alone and asks for a new review.
You can always stop a run. After an interruption SyncGuard tells you what was completed and what needs a new review. An unreachable drive never counts as an empty folder.
In all honesty
SyncGuard does one thing and tries to do it well. These are not part of it.
Status
SyncGuard is in development. There is no download yet.
Availability, price and system requirements will be announced on this page once the app is ready. Do you already have a question? Feel free to get in touch.
Questions
We will announce it once the app is ready. We will only name a date when it is certain.
Price and licensing will follow at launch.
SyncGuard is being made for macOS. The exact system requirements will follow at launch.
SyncGuard syncs folders in one direction and keeps the files it replaces or deletes. It is not a replacement for a full backup of your Mac, such as Time Machine.
